Frederick County Retired School Personnel Association

LEGISLATIVE
The Maryland Retired School Personnel Association’s Legislative Committee, composed of members from local associations throughout the state, is looking out for your interests in Annapolis. We advocate on your behalf. Each year, the committee reviews our legislative goals. This year, those goals include:
-
protecting well-earned pensions,
-
enhancing health care,
-
ensuring safety for seniors,
-
supporting public education,
-
promoting technological access for seniors,
-
defending the right to vote,
-
safeguarding consumer rights,
-
helping seniors age in place, and
-
addressing the rising cost of long-term care.
The Legislative Committee monitors bills introduced into the Maryland General Assembly and, during the legislative session, meets frequently to determine whether the Association should monitor, support, or oppose specific bills. Sometimes we write letters or testify in opposition or support of legislation and occasionally ask our members to contact their legislators in regard to a specific bill. We will keep you informed. Please contact us if you have any questions. -- Tom Slater, Legislative Committee Chair. Contact @ tgslawslate@comcast.net
MRSPA Legislative Committee 2025 Update #1 February 2025
Since the Maryland General Assembly convened in January your MRSPA Legislative Committee has been hard at work looking out for your interests in Annapolis. Our intrepid Legislative Aide Virginia Crespo has been carefully reviewing all of the thousands of bills that have been introduced by legislators so far during this session. The Legislative Committee, composed of members throughout the state, has been reviewing bills that are of interest to the Association and its members, and has decided whether to oppose, support, or study various legislative proposals. So far this year, we have opposed legislation restricting access to voting and legislation allowing for the forfeiture of certain retirement benefits. We have supported legislation that reduces the cost of prescription drugs, improves the Prescription Drug Affordability Board, establishes a tax credit for long-term care premiums and makes it easier to prosecute those who exploit vulnerable senior adults. In addition, we have supported The American Dream Joint Resolution that affirms Maryland’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We have also opposed attempts to impose specific curriculum requirements on state or local educational systems in Maryland. Our committee is currently studying the impact that certain proposed budget cuts may have on our members.
